I recommend Lisdoonvarna as one of the most famous matchmaking festivals in Ireland in my book — as one means to meet an eligible farmer! Despite the popularity of online dating sites, the popularity of the matchmaker still holds strong and of course, the fact that Lisdoonvarna is a world famous festival adds to the fun too. Is it really that successful as a matchmaking festival though? You bet it is. Couples that met at Lisdoonvarna ten, twenty, thirty and forty years ago still return to the festival to meet up with old friends, relive those bygone days and just to enjoy the craic and the dancing.
Coincidentally, when telling a man about my book last summer, he told me that he had met his girlfriend there the previous year. He had planned to go down for the craic with two friends. Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking festival, which has been on the go for over one hundred years, is set to host singletons from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual LGBT community for a weekend of fun and frolics. The Outing, which runs from Friday to Sunday, will mark the opening weekend of the month-long festival which traditionally sees thousands of single men and women descend on the small town of just over people in search of love.
The event is being organised by the Hydro Hotel owner Marcus White, former editor of Free magazine Eddie McGuinness and Donal Mulligan, who first discussed the idea as far back as It had a bigger name and a bigger drive. But, apart from all the loving and laughter, the organisers hope to use the event to raise awareness of LGBT issues that still persist in Ireland. Those statistics are disappointing but it would be remiss to not acknowledge that Ireland has come an awfully long way with regards to gay issues since decriminalisation 20 years ago.
This is, after all, the first major gay event outside a big city in the country. From a societal point of view, this weekend is a very big deal. Twenty years ago the idea that something like this could happen in a small town in Ireland would have been met with disbelief. I take my hat off to the town of Lisdoonvarna. McGuinness, who has worked in the hotel trade as well as event management and choreography, says there will be something for everyone at the event, but for him there are a few acts that stand out.
